The alternate title for this post was “Everyone Should Do It Once”, but I’m a very symmetrical person, so I stuck with the title as you see it. My opinion still stands, however. Everyone should do this (at least) once in their lifetime: a sunset picnic in the Presidio. Oh my word. I just really wish you can do this, because no picture can capture the size and color of the golden sun as it slips behind the fog and into the ocean. No picture can capture the dancing, iridescent water.
During our walk, we discussed dinner options. All day I’d been thinking that I would really like to go watch the sunset, because we’re usually headed home at that time after a day in the city. Thus, we were trying to come up with a way to eat and still be in time. Finally, I just spit out an idea: “Um, do you want to get sandwiches from Bi-Rite and have a picnic? I can call in our order and we can pick them up on our way. It could be fun!”
Super good idea. Within 20 minutes we walked into the market to grab drinks and pick up our dinner, then we headed for the Presidio. I dropped a pin on a Google map so you can see exactly where all of this took place, should you want to do the same thing. We parked on Lincoln, walked down the Battery to Bluffs Trail (pictured above) and sat on the Battery Crosby. (Check out the street view. Swoon.)
Looking straight ahead from where we sat and ate, this was our view. I kind of want to declare it the best dinner view ever… but I can’t say for certain so I’ll just place it near the top of the list :) Like I said before, it was so much more spectacular in person. You can’t even see the sun in this picture. But it was there!
Bi-Rite makes a terrific sandwich, and SF provides terrific scenery. Perfect picnic combination!
The view to the left…
…and the view to the right.
I went to sleep that night with those beautiful lights right outside my window, with the sounds of a flute floating through the air and echoing off the buildings, thanks to a random guy on the street corner below. It was lovely.
